Free Student Editorials And "To Our Readers" Notes The Free Student began as a print monthly in October 1998. It went online-only the following semester, and when it took its annual summer hiatus in 2002, it never came back. Over the course of its online existence, The Free Student, of which I was founder and editor in chief, had publishing schedules ranging from irregular to daily. The Guardian once linked to The Free Student, as did some other interesting sites. My editorial on Cassie Bernall, the Columbine High School student reported--apparently inaccurately--to have affirmed her belief in God before being killed, won a high rank on Google and continues to bring me e-mail.
